Joseph Chiummiento is a seasoned corporate finance and securities lawyer with over two decades of experience at the intersection of business law, public markets, governance, and professional regulation. He is the principal of Chiummiento Law and a former elected Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario (2019–2023), where he served on numerous task forces and committees shaping the future of legal practice in Ontario.

Joseph’s legal career spans a wide array of mandates—from advising TSX-listed issuers on cross-border transactions and joint ventures with state-owned enterprises, to serving as General Counsel for energy and biotech firms, to acting as counsel in litigation before the Superior Court, Divisional Court, Court of Appeal, Tax Court, and Federal Courts. His notable engagements include:

  • Negotiating a $1 billion capex joint venture with a Chinese state-owned Fortune 500 company;
  • Advising on a $70 million IPO and financing strategy for a TSX listing in the energy sector;
  • Leading complex real estate corporate fraud investigation valued at approximately $25 million;
  • Structuring one of Canada’s first charity flow-through financing transactions valued at $10 million.

He has held senior roles in both public and private companies, including directorships with biotech, mining, and cannabis ventures. Joseph is a past director of Cytophage Technologies Inc., a biotech innovator in antimicrobial resistance solutions, and was an independent director on multiple boards, including Aston Bay Holdings and MTC Growth Fund-I Inc., where he acted as chair of audit and compensation committees.

With academic credentials in both law and social work, Joseph’s interdisciplinary background informs his strategic approach to client advocacy, business structuring, and regulatory compliance. He earned his LL.B. from the University of Windsor, where he received advanced corporate and tax law training in the Johnson CIT Advanced Tax, Securities and Corporate Finance program, and holds honours degrees in Social Work and Psychology from York University.

In addition to his legal practice, Joseph is active in legal education and mentorship. He has served as a mentor in business law and trial advocacy at Lincoln Alexander Law School (Toronto Metropolitan University) and coaches licensees through the Law Society of Ontario’s Coach and Advisor Network. He has trained articling students, associates, and law firm staff in substantive law and practice management for nearly two decades. He also serves as a director of Charter Advocates Canada, a non-profit organization that helps Canadians whose charter, constitutional or human and civil rights have been violated.

Today, Joseph’s practice emphasizes practical legal solutions for private business owners, professionals, and families—especially in matters of corporate structure, transition, and succession planning. As a trusted advisor, he brings the full weight of his transactional and regulatory experience to help clients protect, grow, and transition their businesses with clarity and foresight.
